My Favorite Sales Associate – Wendy Levine

I’ve known many, many sales people over the years and there is no one quite like Wendy Levine who works her magic in the designer department at Neiman Marcus at Tyson’s Corner (McLean, Virginia). She has a great eye and can really help put together looks that are fresh, modern and perfectly understated. If you don’t think there are any good sales people out there, think again! Here are five reasons why she should be your go-to sales person the next time you need to refresh your wardrobe, buy a new interview suit, or learn why that Gucci dress costs…

Inside Scoop on Personal Stylists

In today’s Wall Street Journal there’s a pretty good article on personal stylists, highlighting Chris Sharma who works out of Nordstrom’s Tysons Corner store in Northern Virginia. While I was at Nordstrom, Chris’s book of business was legendary. “How does he do it?” we would ask ourselves as yet one more customer came in on our day off to return everything she said she loved. Ah, those were the days! If you want to learn better shopping strategies and/or how to work more effectively with a personal stylist, you need to read my e-books, I Hate to Shop! But Still…

I Hate to Shop! E-books about to launch

We divide women into two categories: those who love to shop, and those who hate it. If you find yourself in the latter group, our I Hate to Shop! But Still Want to Look Great guides were written just for you! My editor assures me the e-books will be ready January 15th, as planned. Do you have a closet full of clothing but nothing to wear? Are you at the point where you know you need to refresh your work wardrobe, but you just don’t know where to start? Do you find yourself leaving stores empty handed because nothing fits…

Post-Christmas Shopping

While electronics and toys are the items of choice for Black Friday shoppers, softer goods, such as clothing and luxury handbags, shoes and other accessories are what shoppers want after Santa’s departure and the stores are full of great deals. Neiman Marcus, for example, has taken an additional 25% off clothing already marked down 30-50%. This is the perfect time to add something special to the basics in one’s wardrobe: a cashmere sweater, a silk scarf, a pair of wool trousers, an expensive dress that’s not so expensive with the discounts, etc. Just remember to make a list and a budget before…

Why Male Execs Dress Better Than Their Female Counterparts

The truth is male executives cultivate a sense of style and dress as they develop professionally and climb the ladder to success. It’s expected that they dress in a powerful way and most rise to the challenge. No mentor would shy away from saying to up and coming Bob Smith, “Bob, that suit is atrocious! For goodness sake, go see my tailor and tell him I sent you.” However, no one will coach rising star Brittany Sanders with this admonishment: “Are you seriously going to wear THAT to the client meeting? Call my stylist and ask for an appointment asap.”…

Lots of Clothes But Nothing to Wear?

Nice article in today’s Washington Post about where to find a good suit for the 30-plus working woman in DC. Author Monica Hesse points her readers to visit the newly refurbished Ann Taylor store on 13th Street NW for fashion-forward suiting. Ms. Hesse also makes an excellent point about how most women don’t know how to shop, resulting in over-stuffed closets and nothing to wear: There are several rites of passage on the way to [dress] Correct. The exhausted jostling at Target for the precious Missoni line. The exhausted pawing through Marshall’s clearance racks, which never has the right size, no mater…

Bare Legs Are So 2010

Researching an article I am writing on pantyhose, I found a piece entitled “Kate Middleton brings back pantyhose. Bare legs are so 2010,” and I laughed out loud. After, of course, sighing in great relief. Finally, a young, hip chick like KM is bringing back something most women over the age of 25 should be wearing in a corporate setting: hosiery. Did I hear someone just call me a fuddy-duddy?? Well, go ahead. The fact remains, very few of us have been blessed with perfect legs, especially yours truly. As I have said before, I could sleep in my Donna…

Style Workshop

Yesterday we had the pleasure of facilitating our fun and informative Style Workshop at the law offices of Winston & Strawn. The ladies enjoyed seeing what we recommend they wear for a business casual setting, how to shop on a budget and what kinds of items they should splurge on this fall. Determining one’s figure types and color “temperatures” (cool or warm) engaged audience members, giving each new ideas and a better understanding of how to dress, always accenting the positive. Here is some of the feedback we received: “I really learned so much about what to wear and how to wear it. My favorite…

Special Announcement

I’m delighted to announce that I am now working with Nordstrom as a Personal Stylist in the Pentagon City store (The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, metro-DC). Nordstrom stores have been an essential resource for me for many years as I helped executives put together working wardrobes. Partnering with such a well respected store allows me to connect with many people who understand how important it is to dress the part for a successful interview, convey confidence with clients, or connect well with others at networking events. We only get one chance to make a great first impression, and what…
